Ganguro Subculture Recreation

CONCEPT
Ganguro, a Japanese sub-culture, also literally translated as “Brown Faced Girls”. Ganguro girls are described to have very deep tans and blonde and multi-coloured hair. They have a disctinct makeup and are seen wearing bright, neon clothing. This trend emerged as a refusal to conform to the traditional beauty norms of the Japanese women. Ganguro is also associated with the way Japanese depict  ghosts and demons, as commonly seen in Kabuki, a classical Japanese dance-drama. Through my styling, I have tried to recreate the Ganguro fashion, yet in some way defied their basic dressing norms. I have also incorporated some elements of the kabuki demons in the styling using a saree, in order to shed light on this other, in a way hidden side of the popular fashion.
